Flight Cancelled? Your Compensation Rights
A cancelled flight gives you TWO separate rights: getting your money back (or a new flight) AND fixed compensation. Airlines often offer only the first — don't leave the second on the table.
The 14-day rule
If the airline informed you less than 14 days before departure, fixed compensation applies: €250/€400/€600 under EU261, £220/£350/£520 under UK261, or 1,390–3,340 ₪ under Israeli law.
Notified earlier than 14 days? No compensation — but you're still owed a full refund or re-routing.
Refund vs. re-routing: your choice
You choose: a full refund of the ticket (including the return leg if the trip is now pointless) within 7 days, OR re-routing to your destination at the earliest opportunity.
The airline may offer vouchers — you can refuse and demand money. A refund never cancels your right to compensation; these are separate claims.
Exceptions
No compensation if the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances AND the airline took all reasonable measures.
Even then, care obligations remain: meals, hotel, and two free phone calls or emails while you wait.
