Flight Delay Compensation Amounts: €250, €400 or €600?
Compensation is not random — it's fixed by law and depends mainly on two things: the flight distance and how late you arrived. Here's exactly how the amounts work.
The distance bands
EU261 and UK261 use three bands: up to 1,500 km (€250 / £220), 1,500–3,500 km (€400 / £350), and over 3,500 km (€600 / £520).
Israel's Tibi Law uses different bands: up to 2,000 km (1,390 ₪), 2,000–4,500 km (2,230 ₪), over 4,500 km (3,340 ₪).
Real route examples
Tel Aviv–London (≈3,600 km): €600 under EU261 if departing the EU, or 2,230 ₪ under Israeli law for an 8+ hour delay.
Berlin–Paris (≈880 km): €250. London–Tbilisi (≈3,550 km): £520 on UK261 for UK departures. The ticket price doesn't matter — a €30 low-cost ticket earns the same €600 as business class.
When amounts are reduced
For long-haul delays of 3–4 hours where the airline offers re-routing, compensation can be cut by 50% (€600 → €300).
Cancellations where the airline offers an alternative arriving within 2–4 hours of the original time can also halve the payout.
